The Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor today. The attack was devestating. My wife watches me as read through the reports, from Hawaii, each one more terrible than the last. I know she can tell that I am extremely worried, no matter how I try to hide it, and the mood here in Wachington has moved from outrage to panic (Danzer 557).
"I never wanted to fight this war on two fronts," I tell her, " We haven't the the Navy to fight on both the Atlantic and the Pacific...So we will have to build up the Navy and the Air Force and that will mean that we will have to take a good many defeats before we can have a victory." (quoted in Danzer et al 557). 1500 have been killed and 1500 wounded. This attack has crippled the Pacific Fleet, and will push us into the war (Fjell 1).
December 8 1941
Today the Congress is hoding a meeting. Every important member is there as I give my speech. I ask Congress to declare war on Japan, and cheers are heard. Only one Congress man has dissented. Never has the United States been so united ("Pearl" 1). Many who were isolationist now support an all-out American effort (Danzer et al 557). Senator Burton Wheeler, a former isolationist, has even declared "The only thing now to do is to lick the h#$$ out of them." (qtd in Danzer et al 557). However, prejudices against Japanese American citizens are also amoung the strongest of reactions ("Pearl" 1).
December 10 1941
Throughout the last couple of days young men have been storming the military recruitment offices, and Germany and Italy have declared war on us (Danzer et al 557).
